Covid-19 - new February lockdown rules - what you can and can't do

The Catalan government has announced updated rules and guidelines relating to the ongoing pandemic.
TLDR: as of Monday 8 February, you can:

travel within your comarca (was municipality)
go to the gym (30%, and you have to book)
go to lunch or breakfast at a restaurant for 1 hour more

You are not allowed to leave or enter Catalonia without good reason (e.g. work, emergency, important administrative reasons, court summons, caring for dependents, etc).
Comarcal (county, NOT municipal) lockdown from Monday 8 February - 22 February

You may not leave your comarca (county, e.g. Barcelonès, Vallès Occidental) during this time, except for good reason (e.g. work, school, looking after dependents, medical emergency, etc). Here is a map of the comarques of Catalonia.
This overrules the previous municipal lockdown. You are no longer limited to staying in one town/municipality.
For anyone living in Barcelona, this means that you can travel freely between BCN, l'Hospitalet, Badalona, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Santa Coloma de Gramanet.
You can download the updated self-declaration form here
You can meet in groups of 6 people max, from up to 2 'bubble' groups

The daily curfew rules remain:

Everyone should be off the streets and indoors between 2200-0600.
Public transport schedules do not change
You can use a "self responsibility certificate" (see above) to explain why you're breaking the rules
Fines range from 300€ to 6,000€

Bars and restaurants:

May open from 7.30 am to 10.30 am, and from 1.00 pm to 4.30 pm
May open during the rest of the day, but only for takeaways
Max 4 people per table (6 if you all live together)
Indoors: 30% occupancy
Terraces: 100% occupancy
2 meter safety distance must be observed for all customers
Deliveries until 11pm, collect take out until 10pm

Shops, stores and other businesses:

All non-essential shops and stores closed at weekends
Shopping centers closed
All stores over 400m2 closed for the full 10 days
Hairdressers and beauty salons can open, clients need a prior appointment

Culture

Cinemas, theaters and concert halls may open to 50% occupancy (max 500 people)
Museums and galleries open to 50%
Bookshops can open normally

Education

Some university courses will now require attendance
After-school activities remain suspended

Sport and fitness

Outdoor sports facilities open (max 50% occupancy)
Gyms may open to 30% occupancy. Clients will need to book in advance. Changing rooms cannot be used except for going swimming
Competitions remain suspended
Outdoors sports activities in groups of 6 max

Others

Casinos, bingo halls etc remain closed
Indoor playgrounds remain closed
Outdoor playgrounds open until 8pm
Religious and civil ceremonies allowed, up to 30% occupancy

Work

Companies should encourage working from home, where possible
Conventions, trade shows and fairs etc. are all banned

A police investigation is taking place which would also have prevented the show from happening. We know how disappointed fans will feel, but can only say at this point, the gig will be re-arranged and we will have news of the revised date as soon as possible.

Jay Kay would like to apologise to disappointed fans for the cancellation of last night's show in France. Jay's on-going groin injury has been diagnosed as a hernia which will be need to be operated on later in the summer. Following an MRI scan last week specialists had advised rest but Jay has insisted he wants to try to finish the current run of dates. Doctors have said that provided he manages the pain sufficiently he can continue performing if he feels able. During the course of the past two days the pain flared up again and yesterday he reluctantly decided he did not feel he well enough to perform last night. After two days rest he is hopeful he will be able to complete the remaining 4 shows of the current run, including Toulon tomorrow night. Jay said "I would like to thank fans for their understanding, this is a very frustrating injury and some days the pain is just too extreme to perform to a standard I believe is acceptable. I promise I will do my best to come back out again soon when I'm fully fit and am optimistic I'll be able to pull off the remaining shows of the run."

Mediterranean Cruise (2018)

Here is how to make the most of a one-week Mediterranean cruise and see as much of Europe that one can possibly manage in one week. I planned our cruise to minimize any unpleasant surprises and yet leave room to be spontaneous and adventurous.
This article is not about cruise ships and you do not have to be a fan of cruises as my trip was mostly on land other than the overnight cruising. I felt that at the age of 57, I had delayed Europe long enough and with my busy business schedule, the cruise was the only way to get a snapshot of three countries and six cities in 10 days total, plus two days for flying from and to Canada. My wife does not like cruises, and I was left to travel with Lucas, our seventeen-year-old!
In August 2018, Lucas and I flew to Barcelona, Spain, the embarking port for the Norwegian, Epic cruise ship. It was our very first time on a cruise and our very first time to Europe except for England. I do not recommend August or July for this trip as it is high season for local tourism, and it is too hot to walk the cities (well too hot for me). However, if you have kids in school, then you understand that it must be summer, unless you choose to go without them.
Our ship would mostly cruise at nighttime giving us a full day from 7 am to 6 pm in most cities. That was perfect for me because there is only so much staring at water I can enjoy, and spending time in a tiny casino or eating non-stop are not my kind of pastime. If you are a cruise fan, then Norwegian Epic is great. They have about 10 wonderful restaurants, a superbly well-organized huge buffet with great selection of international food, a nice water park on the upper deck, and even a youth club with games, music, and dance to keep your teens entertained.
Every evening after our long city walk, Lucas and I enjoyed a nice meal after our shower and then watched a show or a musical performance before we hit the sack in our comfortable balcony room. I do not like closed spaces and a balcony room was well worth the small difference in price, even though we did not have much time to be on the balcony. Epic was also completely renovated in 2015, which meant it was clean and up to date on amenities. Always check the year the ship was build or was renovated before committing to a cruise.
Our cruise had stops in these cities:
1- Barcelona, Spain - embarking
a. visit Gothic centre, La Rambla, La Sagrada Familia church, Park Güell,
2- Naples, Italy
a. Rented a car and drove to Sorrento (an hour drive)
3- Rome, Italy
a. Took the train to the city centre and then the city tour-bus to Vatican City, San Angelo Castle, Piazza di Spagna – drove past Colosseum
4- Florence and Pisa tower, Italy – walking tour, site seeing
5- Cannes and Nice, France – walking tour, site seeing
6- Mallorca (Majorca), Spain - took a taxi to Palma Nova beach, swam and chilled
What to pack? We traveled very light with one carryon and a backpack. The backpack was for our extra stuff and NOT for touring the city. I do not recommend walking with a backpack, even less in the summer. Other than the usual travel items, here are some essentials I had to buy.
1- Light and cool walking shoes that were comfortable for walking and cool for summer. I bought a pair of nice leather sandals with good support and solid straps for walking. Also packed a pair of dress shoes for evening dinner on the ship and exercise shoes that I never used!
2- Summer shirts. I ordered some European collared Linen shirts. They look nice, are cool, and comfortable. www.bensherman.com has a good selection of those if you live in Canada or USA. Pack lots of tees for less formal places.
3- A couple of dress pants (linen and or khaki) for the evening restaurant and shows and dress shorts for long walks.
4- Beach sandal and swimming trunk for the Beach in Mallorca which I ended up buying in Cannes
5- Your credit card, Euro currency, and travel documents of course. Leave them in the safety box in your room and only take what you need for the day.
Barcelona, Spain: We arrived Barcelona three days ahead of schedule to experience one city for more than just a day. We stayed at the Boutique Hotel Violeta (http://violetaboutique.com/home/) in the centre of the city and only three blocks from the Plaza Catalunya. It was the best and most centric location in my opinion. I loved the hotel.
Violeta was a small hotel that reminded me of my apartment in Buenos Aires. The hotel is in a residential apartment building where they had turned two floors into hotel rooms. The Gothic architecture offered us a giant completely renovated room with a very high ceiling. We had two queen size beds in our room, a sitting area and plenty of open space. The reception was extremely helpful with information, and being small, made check-in a breeze.
Violeta Boutique also included a European coffee and pastry breakfast but if you wanted an American breakfast, there was a small cafe next door on the street level and plenty of other options within a three-block radius.
Our three days in Barcelona coincided with the Fiesta de Gracia (thanksgiving!) which was a 20-minute bus ride from Plaza Catalunya. I had bought a 10-ride Metro-Bus pass (Credit card size) from the Metro (subway, underground) station at Catalunya. Fiesta de Gracia was in the Garcia neighborhood where all the streets were colourfully decorated by the residents and live bands played all night on the streets and restaurants had set outdoor patios. The music was free, the food was reasonably priced, and people were jolly. It was my second favourite part of our time in Barcelona and we went there two evenings.

From the airport, we took a bus straight to Plaza Catalunya (Plaça de Catalunya) in 20 minutes and then walked three blocks to our hotel. I had the hotel directions Googled (searched) in advance. I am fluent in Spanish (the Argentine version) so taking public transit was natural for me. Although Barcelona is a destination for international tourism and most people in the industry seem to speak English.
I bought a SIM card for my phone (which was unlocked in advance) at the airport for €30 from Vodafone (https://www.vodafone.com/) that gave me 10 Gig of mobile data covering most of Europe for up to a month. It did not include coverage on the cruise ship.
La Rambla and the old Gothic city in Barcelona were 10 to 15-minute walk from our hotel or Plaza Catalunya. You want to spend half a day walking this area, watching the beautiful shops, the narrow streets of Gothic centre and try a street café or restaurant.
La Sagrada Familia is a must see for its architecture alone. We took a bus there, but you must purchase tickets in advance if you plan to go inside on a specific day and skip the long lineup. This is another half-day venture unless you want to tour the outside which is fascinating enough. I found it amazing to see how much craft and detail was offered to decorate the exterior of the building. It is no wonder that the new extension brings a modern and plain contrast that just does not quite match the elegance and masterful craftsmanship of the old.

Park Guell is another 20-minute bus ride to the higher altitudes of Barcelona. It is a beautiful park with some very interesting structures left behind. It was a good half-day break from the city to relax and enjoy the nature. You can also see the entire city from the top.
Restaurant can be pricey in the touristy Plaça de Catalunya area. I managed to venture a couple of blocks off the main streets and find some local small restaurants. We had a great satisfying meal at a fantastic price and mingled with the residents. I even found a little Italian owned pizza place! Of course, we also tried the more refined tapas restaurants. After all, we were tourists.
Naples, Italy: The longest leg of our cruise was from Barcelona to Naples which took a full day at sea. That was perfect because it provided us the opportunity to navigate the ship and the amenities, learn the evening programs, browse the list of restaurants, and to start our reservations. I did not think that Naples had enough to interest me for the whole day and I hungered to see the Amalfi coast. Amalfi coast was too far for a day trip, so I decided that Sorrento and maybe Positano would be close enough. I rented a car from Hertz in advance which was a five-minute walk from the port. The car cost me about $150 Canadian, tax included! Luckily, I still remembered how to drive standard transmission (stick-shift).
We made it to Sorrento on the scenic highway with no problem. Traffic did slow at some points giving the driver (me) an opportunity to enjoy the scenery. About 10 minutes before arriving, atop the hills on the narrow road that took us to Sorrento, I found a little space to park the car and breath-in the fresh view of Sorrento waterfront. We could see the sail boats floating on the Mediterranean blue water, and the colourful little houses built on the slope of the hill from the top all the way to the sea. The buildings were in so many colours as if the quaint Sorrento were architected by Michelangelo to be lived by DaVinci’s Mona Lisa.

Sorrento was so beautiful that we spent the entire day there. We parked the car in an underground parking across to Gran Hotel Europa Palace (www.europapalace.com) on the hilltop. We must have spend about 45 minutes roaming the exterior of the hotel, admiring the architecture and the impressive iron gate, and then spending time on the back patio taking a closer look at the colourful buildings on the hill rolling down to the water. There were stone walking paths from the houses to the water where a giant deck with seats and shades turned the sea into a giant public pool.

The ladies in reception were extremely helpful offering us information and allowing me to charge my mobile since I had forgotten my charger! According to one of them, the German war maps were still on the lobby walks behind the giant paintings at this fortress (now hotel). I wanted to go down to the waterfront for lunch. So, the nice lady called her friend, the owner of a restaurant on the waterfront, and they sent us a car at no charge and after lunch they drove us back. The ride to the water was through narrow winding streets of Sorrento. After lunch we took a walk along the harbour and watched the sail boats rock on calm waters. I would like to spend a week or more in Southern Italy some day.
I forgot to mention that my cousin lives in Naples working on his PhD. He was our translator for the day. This was our first encounter in forty years (that is a sad tale that should not ruin this travel story). On the way back, we sat in a very nice café in Naples and had an amazing coffee and pastry before heading back to our ship. Italian pastry is the best, with my apology to mom and all the Persians.

Rome, Italy: The port for Rome is in Civitavecchia, an hour drive from Rome. A tour purchased from the cruise would have been around $300 CDN per person. I like to think that I am adventurous and enjoy experimenting the local ways as much as I can. However, I understand that you may think that I am just cheap. I am fine with that. My son (Lucas) and I took a five-minute bus ride to the train station and paid €10 each to take the fast train to Rome. I love trains a lot more than buses.
We could have ventured Rome with local transit; however, our time was limited and we could not afford any time asking for directions. If I recall accurately, the daily hop-on-hop-off city tour was about €20 per person. To visit Rome and only spend one day should be a crime but a snapshot to calm my itching curiosity was the deal I had taken. I would say that Rome and Vatican City would require at least a week. There are many ancient Basilicas other than St. Peter’s each offering a unique history and that alone is well worth a week for me.
The bus passed by the Colosseum, check mark. We were heading to the Vatican City knowing well that we may not make it inside. After all, Vatical city is a day by itself. The bus dropped us a few blocks away in front of San Angelo Castle also known as Mausoleum of Hadrian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castel_Sant%27Angelo. The castle was a tall cylinder-like giant stone building walled all around like a fortress. I thought we would take a quick tour of the place at €15 (it was free for minors “Lucas”). We ended up spending over two hours admiring the decorated walls and ceilings with painting that were full of stories, and the museum items there were placed in its numerous rooms. We climbed many rocky stairs all the way to the top of this tallest structure in Rome, ventured the narrow hallways and took some pictures on the roof.
San Angelo Castle
The entrance to Vatican City was a ten-minute walk. Before crossing the bridge over Tiber (Tevere) we sat on the patio of a river-side food booth to have a snack. We walked to Vatican City and spent an hour in St. Peter’s Square (Piazza San Pietro) observing the architecture, the elegantly attired Guards, the crowd lining up and the shops that lure the tourist.
We took the tour bus back to Piazza di Espagna. This was the cleanest, most modern, and prettiest part of the city that our eyes had seen in the past few hours. The bus left us on the upper escalation of the Piazza where I took some pictures before descending the steep long set of steps into the centre of the shops and restaurants. We walked for about an hour window shopping and then found a restaurant patio in a pedestrian intersection. It was a touristy area but still reasonably priced. We certainly could give ourselves this one treat before heading back to the train station for our hour and twenty-minute ride back.

Total cost of our Rome venture including transportation, admissions, and food (for two) was €150. Lunch was the biggest expense.

Florence and Pisa, Italy: Another restaurant and show evening aboard the Norwegian Epic, and we arrived in Florence (port of Livorno) early morning. Getting to Florence by public transit was too complicated. A car ride from port of Livorno to Florence was about 90 minutes and to Pisa around 30 minutes. I was lucky to find a private mini-van taxi (a brand new eight-seater Mercedes) that needed two more passengers to get going. At €50 per person to take us to Florence and then Pisa and back, it was a great deal. This deal could have been booked online in advance for €40. A lesson learned here. The other people sharing our ride were a family of four from Montreal, and a mother-son pair from Los Angles.
Everyone was very reserved and quiet. Lucas and I sat in the front with the driver and I spend the entire trip learning from our friendly driver. Florence is beautiful and quaint. However, I thought I had enough architecture in Rome and did not feel like lining up for an hour to see another church. We took a walking tour of Florence and had a meal at small sandwich joint run by two very funny and entertaining ladies. They offered a great selection of artisanal sandwiches, but almost two years later now, I cannot remember what I ate.
Pisa was another little town walled all around. I can imagine the great length the leaders had to go to protect people from attacks and we so often take our freedom for granted. Of course, we must protect ourselves from partisan politics and corporate lawyers, but that is easily manageable. At this point of the trip, I had enough sight seeing. I would have been good with a video of Pisa on YouTube. Here is a picture of the magnificent but defected marble structure.

Canes and Nice, France:
Canes, France was physically the most beautiful city on this trip, in my opinion. It was manicured clean and peaceful. Canes did not have a port for the cruise ships, hence we had to anchor in the sea and take the emergency boats to the shore. The emergency boats were giant, and each held about 200 people. We had a short time here and we were tired. I should have taken a tour bus, but my sense of adventure (or cheapness) had us walking up the steep and narrow winding street and then back down to the city centre for a bite.
I found a small sandwich shop to share a ham and cheese baguette and a couple of drinks with Lucas. In my broken French, I asked the young lady behind the counter if she could cut the baguette in half for us and she gave me a stern “Non”. I am not certain whether that was a lack of courtesy or I had crossed some religious or cultural boundaries. It was simple enough to split the baguette with me hand. We should have continued our tour of the city and stayed in Canes as I had advised our friends from Quebec. However, a sudden urge came over me to take the train to Nice. We did, and Nice’s downtown and beach area were beautiful to walk; however, the injustice I did to my own principals of travelling is unforgivable. The whole day was just too rushed and consuming.

Mallorca (Majorca) Spain:
The trip from Canes to Mallorca was the second longest leg of the cruise. We arrived Mallorca around 1 pm giving us roughly five hours on the Island. After seven days of walking the cities in the heat of August, even the young Lucas was exhausted. The port in Mallorca was not walking distance to any interesting place and Lucas wished to spend the day at a beach. Great idea, I thought.
I Googled the most scenic beaches nearby and Palma Nova was the second choice but the only feasible option due to our limited time. We had a brief line up for a taxi right at the port. There was a family of five from Peru from our cruise in front of us in the lineup and they could not all fit into one taxi. I invited the grandpa of the family to come with us since they were heading to the same beach. Grandpa was a good companion and an opportunity for me to learn about Peru. We agreed on a time for going back together and then split to our ventures.
Palma Nova was perfect to spend a day. The beach had the right amount of crowd and was decorated by some rocky hills on one side for us to take a walk in between swims. The water was perfectly tempered, calm, and clear blue. There were no high rises nor big tourist hotels on this beach and plenty of restaurants and shops. For lunch we crossed the street on the beach to a patio and I shared a nice pizza and drinks for €12. We paid €15 for the bamboo umbrella and two chairs to have our spot on the beach and about €35 total for the taxi ride back and forth. That brings our total to €62 for a beautiful relaxing day in Majorca.

I would like to spend a week in Mallorca. There are many scenic quaint towns and beautiful beaches to enjoy. If you are interested to know more, you can search for Palma, Sóller, Valldemossa, and Pollença. All these are on the west side of the island and within an hour drive from Palma. I would stay in Palma and make day trips to each of these towns. If you are a tennis fan, then you will probably add Rafael Nadal’s academy (https://www.rafanadalacademy.com/en) to the list, which is about an hour drive east of Palma.

Our last night on the cruise was concluded by a beautiful three course meal and listening to a live band on the middle deck’s lobby. There was a talented singer among the passengers and a few great dancers on board who joined the performance. It was a great way to end the cruise. We arrived Barcelona early morning, well rested, with a fresh shower and a full tummy. We found a taxi and headed straight to the airport to catch our noon flight back to Toronto without rush. I suppose my project management trainings mixed with my entrepreneurial nature, made a perfect schedule for the trip. Liverpool, dengan trio Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, dan Mohamed Salah di depan, ialah ancaman bagi barisan belakang Atletico, terutama Jan Oblak di bawah tiang. Tetapi, Felix, Alvaro Morata, maupun Diego Costa, serta sayap-sayap Atletico pada di Angel Correa, Koke, hingga Kieran Trippier juga bisa memberi mimpi buruk pada Adrian.

The 2005 Disappearance of George Alan Smith IV - Accident or Coverup?

This is my first post on this subreddit. I apologise if it is very long, I wanted to try and include all the facts. I am a huge fan of Unresolved Mysteries and I hope to leave more posts in the future. I wanted to start with this one because I find cruise disappearances very interesting and I couldn't find anything on this case. Premise: George Alan Smith IV was a 26 year old Connecticut man who went missing under mysterious circumstances while on a 12-day cruise with his new bride, Jennifer Hagel Smith. Although it is assumed he went overboard at some point during the early morning hours of July 5th 2005, how that happened remains a mystery.
Background: George Smith came from the upper-crust Connecticut town of Cos Cob, near Greenwich. His family owns a popular liquor store there, and he was the store's General Manager. He had been married to his wife, Jennifer, for 10 days. She was a teacher, who was to begin a new job teaching third-graders upon their return. The newlyweds were honeymooning on a Royal Caribbean International cruise of the Mediterranean, which departed from Barcelona on Wednesday 29th June 2005 and was due to stop in Greece, France, Turkey and Italy, among other locations. The cruise ship the couple were staying on was the MS Brilliance of the Seas and they had booked Stateroom 9062, a cabin with a balcony situated on Deck 9. By all accounts, George and Jennifer appeared to be having a wonderful time those first few days of their honeymoon. Photographs show them embracing by the pool and on the second night, after a day spent exploring Villefranche-sur-Mer in France, the Smiths’ decided to have a get-together in their room, the noise of which kept their neighbour awake until almost 3:30am. The next morning this neighbour reported the incident to the guest-relations desk and asked what could be done. If it happened again, he was told, call the desk, and they would handle it.
The Disappearance: On Monday 4th July 2005, the Smiths were half-way through their cruise and had spent the afternoon exploring Mykonos, a popular Greek island. Jennifer had reported that they had been on a high as they returned to the ship that evening, because they had spotted the actress Tara Reid, who was filming her show "Taradice" on the island. The couple had planned a romantic dinner on the ship for that night, which seemingly occurred without incident. After dinner they spent some time at the casino and all reports said they were in good spirits and seemed to be acting normally, albeit a little rowdy. As is common on most cruises, the Smiths had become friendly acquaintances with a number of other guests on the ship, mostly other couples, but also a 20-year old Californian student named Josh Askin and another group of four boisterous young Russian-American men. The four were traveling with relatives; their group, numbering eight people in all, consisted of two families, both with the surname Rozenberg. One family hailed from South Florida and the second are believed to be from Brighton Beach, a Russian section of Brooklyn. Between them the families had three sons aboard, all said to be in their teens or early 20s: Jeffrey, Zachary, and Greg. Also in the group was a 20-year-old named Rostislav “Rusty” Kofman.
Following some time spent at the casino, the Smiths met up with another newlywed couple who they had befriended and who had gotten married on the same day in June as the Smiths had. They then headed to the on-board disco, where the Smiths and their friends were joined by Josh Askin, two of the Rozenberg boys and Rusty Kofman (it is not clear whether they had all socialised prior to this night). They all sat around a table drinking absinthe, which the cruise staff reported is not sold on the ship and must have been smuggled on-board.
It was at this stage that Jennifer Smith's behaviour is called into question. Josh Askin reported that Jennifer had been very flirtatious with one of the croupiers at the casino, a South African man named Lloyd Botah. When the group left the casino to go to the disco, Botah accompanied them, staying close to Jennifer the entire time. At the disco, Jennifer continued to flirt with Lloyd and also attempted to drape herself over other men. At this point, George noticed his wife's behaviour and attempted to intervene. An argument between the couple ensued, culminating in Jennifer kicking her new husband in the groin and storming out of the disco, with Botah following after her (although this detail is refuted by others, who say he remained behind). Shortly after the Smiths’ disagreement, at about 3:30am, the disco closed, and Askin, the two Rozenbergs and Rusty Kofman became aware that George was highly intoxicated and was too drunk to walk unaided, and so they helped him to his cabin. When they arrived at Stateroom 9062, Jennifer wasn’t there and George stated he wanted to find her. George changed his shirt and then, with Askin and the three Russian boys, headed to the solarium, where the cruise ship’s younger crowd would congregate after the disco ended each night. Jennifer wasn’t there either and so the group then helped George back to his room, arriving at 4:02am—a time verified by a computerized monitoring system that tracks when key cards are used to open stateroom doors. This was the last time anyone reported seeing George Smith.
It was after this time that noises coming from the Smiths room, described by one neighbour as “loud cheering—what sounded like a college drinking game...as well as high pitched yelling”, were first reported to crew members. At one point this neighbour believes he might have heard at least one person leaving the Smiths' cabin and talking in the corridor. After this, an argument with "at least three voices" was reported coming from the Smiths' balcony. At around 4:15am, the neighbour reports hearing voices ushering people out of the room, and distinctly heard the words "Goodnight, Goodnight" repeatedly, followed by the cabin door closing. The neighbour says he then waited about 10 seconds before opening his door and looking out, where he states he saw three men, whose identities have never been released publicly. Other neighbours reported hearing three male subjects talking in the corridor at around this same time, and they stated two of the men had "accents" (the Rozenbergs?). This is where questions start to arise, it is reported that 4 men accompanied George back to his room, but only three are seen and heard leaving, so who remained behind? Maybe the group misremembered and only three men went back to the cabin, or maybe one left earlier? Either way it is unclear who is in the room after 4:15am.
It was after 4:15am that the same neighbour claims to have heard a single voice speaking in a conversational tone, followed by furniture being moved around, and he speculated the Smiths may have been cleaning up after the party. He says this "clean up" lasted around 10 minutes before the sounds moved to the balcony, and he states he heard one of the metal balcony chairs being moved. All was quiet for around a minute, and then he describes a very loud thud, which was so loud it made his bed vibrate. He states it was not the sound of someone falling off the balcony, but instead it sounded more like someone falling on the balcony, except it was so loud he didn't believe a single person falling could have created it. He thought it could have been furniture, such as a couch, falling or being thrown on the floor. He said no screams or voices followed the thud, and all was quiet after that. So presumably despite what this neighbour states, the sound he heard was George falling off the balcony and hitting the canopy below. But did he fall or was he pushed? The neighbour said he always heard the Smiths coming and going from their cabin because he could clearly hear their door opening and closing, but on this occasion he didn't hear anything. So if someone was still in the room with George, did they manage to leave silently? The neighbour says the next thing he heard were the crew members arriving at the cabin to respond to the noise complaints from the passengers. However they only knocked and didn't enter the room, as the noises had stopped.
When question by authorities, Askin indicated that he, Kofman, and the two Rozenbergs stayed with George for 10 or 15 minutes in his cabin after returning from the solarium. During this time Askin stated he used the bathroom. He says that everyone departed by 4:15am, leaving no one inside but George. Kofman disputes this, saying everything happened 15 minutes earlier, and they all left and were back in their rooms by 4am. He states he has a timestamped photo proving this. Whatever the timing, Kofman insists the last he saw of George Smith was when the boys left him on his bed; George thanked them for looking after him, kissed one of the boys and promised to buy them a round of drinks the next day. According to Askin, he went to Kofman’s room with the others and was back in his own stateroom by 5:15am.
During this entire incident, Jennifer Smith was nowhere to be seen. According to several witnesses, she was seen leaving the disco at about 3:15am—just minutes before George and his friends left. It should have taken her less than five minutes to return to her stateroom, and if she did return, might she have been there for some of the party and then left? Evidently, she was not in her room all night. From the disco it appeared she took the elevator down to Deck 9, but she must have been so drunk she became disoriented. Instead of turning right, into the long port corridor that led to their stateroom, she turned left, into the starboard corridor. From there she walked until the corridor ended in an alcove with a maintenance door. It was here Jennifer passed out and was found by crew. She claims she believes she may have been drugged and led to this alcove by someone who left her there.
Jennifer Smith was found passed out at approximately 4:30 a.m. on the floor of a lounge area on Deck 9. The crew members who found her went to look for her husband back at their cabin, but entered and could not find him, and so they put Mrs Smith in a wheelchair and she was taken back to her seemingly empty cabin just before 5am, where she was placed on the bed. The staff reported that while they did not search the room at the time, nothing looked amiss, and so they left Mrs Smith to sleep. Jennifer says she remembers nothing from that night after the group left the casino, but says she slept for around three hours and then awoke as the ship docked and let people off at Kusadasi, Turkey. She said although her husband was nowhere to be seen when she woke up, nothing else seemed amiss in the cabin and she quickly remembered a 10am couples massage she had booked earlier in the week, and so got dressed and headed two floors up, hoping George would meet her there. When he did not arrive at the spa, she presumed he was passed out himself in a friend's cabin and would return to their room when he regained consciousness. She stated he had passed out outside their cabin on two prior occasions during their trip (seems like this couple know how to party to excess!) and so she was not immediately worried.
However Royal Caribbean officials said that Mrs Smith actually arrived about an hour and a half early for her massage and was in the treatment room when crew members came looking for her. They approached Jennifer to say that the cruise ship staff had received calls that morning from passengers who, in the daylight, had noticed blood on the awning outside their cabin, and indeed blood had been found outside the cabin and on a lifeboat canopy below their balcony. They said they suspected her husband had fallen overboard in a tragic, alcohol fuelled accident. A member of the crew was allowed inside the cabin to retrieve Mrs Smith's belongings, and she reports that she was escorted from the boat along with Mr Askin (who had come forward after hearing pages for George across the intercom) and the two were questioned by Turkish authorities. She then reports that she was left behind in Turkey to make her own way home, however staff from the ship strongly dispute this, saying she insisted on leaving on her own accord. The cruise staff have also been criticised for washing away the blood found inside and outside the cabin, although they claim they washed the area only after Turkish authorities had given them permission to do so. Police also boarded the ship, photographed the bloodstained canopy, and searched the Smiths’ stateroom. They reportedly found small droplets of blood on a bedsheet and a towel inside the cabin.
The aftermath and investigation: The family reported that little was done by Royal Caribbean International or the Turkish authorities to investigate George's disappearance, instead they insisted he had been extremely intoxicated and had fallen overboard, however no body has ever been located. The FBI were soon involved and once home in Cromwell, Jennifer reported that within a week, she met with the FBI and agreed to give blood and hair samples to their agents and to take a polygraph test that she said she passed. The investigation soon seemed to focused on the group of four Russians and Josh Askin, who the Smiths had befriended.
There was a lot of reluctance on the part of the media to identify these young men, which seems very odd in itself. What was also odd was the Russian boys' behaviour throughout the cruise, which gained a lot of attention and was described as outlandish, arrogant and rude. For example, when asked by a crew member to put out a cigarette in a non-smoking section of the ship, one of the boys cursed the employee and continued smoking. Their parents were warned numerous times about their sons' behaviour, however it seems little was done to control them. After the boat left Turkey on 5th July without Mrs Smith, the Rozenbergs and Mr Kofman continued to cause trouble. Two more incidents involving them allegedly occurred over the next 48 hours, one involving arguments between the Rozenbergs and staff over the age of their son Greg and whether he should be allowed enter the disco and another involving the four boys cursing at staff members. The parents were summoned and were told that if another incident occurred, they would all be asked to leave the ship.
On Thursday July 7th, a young girl reported being raped by Rusty Kofman and the three Rozenberg boys and the incident was videotaped. Kofman was the only one identified on tape, and claimed the sex was consensual. However rumors were spreading and 13 people in total were escorted from the ship, including the Rozenberg group and the Askin family. Perhaps the most damning piece of evidence pointing to their potential involvement in Georges disappearance is a videotape found on one of the Rozenberg boys' phone that appears to show three of the four men commenting on George's presumed death in a very callous way. The Smith family attorney stated "the most incriminating statement (from the video) comes when one of them stands up at the end of the tape and sort of hunches his shoulders and flashes gang signs and says, 'Told ya I was gangsta' and in the context of the discussion about George's death, almost as if he's bragging about having done something to George."
Since then the FBI have investigated both the rape allegations and the disappearance of George Smith, but so far, no arrests have been made. There has been a lot of controversy over the Royal Caribbean's supposed handling of the crime scene and Mrs Smith in the aftermath of the disappearance, with conflicting statements coming from both sides. George Smith's family and his wife insist he was murdered and the cruise staff covered it up to avoid a media frenzy. They state they believe the FBI will make arrests in the future. But why would someone want to kill George? There’s been speculation that he spoke of having a large amount of cash in his stateroom, but no one involved in the case says any money was missing.
Alternatively a less nefarious theory is that George could have gone out to the balcony for a cigar and somehow fell overboard. Or in his drunken state he could have tried to sit up on the railings and fell overboard. I'm inclined to believe one of the latter theories, although the disputes over how many men entered George's cabin on the 5th July versus how many were seen and heard leaving does make me question the accident theory, plus the small amount of blood found inside the cabin and the statements about George made on the video.

An idea for a collaborative MGSV conclusion

This is a post I originally did under another username on Metal Gear Wiki, and someone suggested putting it up here. So here's my idea: Basically, it'd be called Metal Gear Solid V: Dispatches From Outer Heaven. A giant conclusion to V, made by a bunch of us working together to come up with a giant game plan and story line and such, detailing the events from the recovery of Sahelanthropus to Venom Snake's final defeated moments before heading off to fight Solid Snake in Outer Heaven. Also flashbacks, subplots, you name it. I'm thinking big, like Sergio Leone's original 10-hour cut of Once Upon A Time In America, but exponentially bigger. Who knows, we could even send it to Konami and see if they make it. Is anyone here interested? Oh, and I'm happy to be on this fine sub-reddit. Now for stuff I posted at the MG wiki.
Basically a bunch of changes and additions that could have been done, a subject that I'm sure makes everyone here just want to snap and kill Kojima or Konami for the game. So before I start, no acidic anything, please.
1) Major expansions to the story. The core is already there, but to use an analogy, it is a draft or a scriptment instead of a thousand page novel it could have been. The story could be put into as much as five chapters (so that it'd be "Revenge, Race, Peace, Pain, and something involving how blood and national feuds carry on to the next generation). They could have gone into Skulls Face's backstory a lot more, for example. And adding several additional missions for before Mission 51. And more exploration of themes, for example how low humans can sink in certain conditions. One element can be switching between Venom Snake and Big Boss on their separate stories.
2) Locations, a lot more and much more detailed. I got to thinking about this while playing the Uncharted series recently, like they have a lot more variety to their locations. And also these locations are much bigger in scale, like they actually feel like you're there. For example, a sequence set in a Colombian city has lots of people, like it's being used, instead of say the Mfinda oilfield in MGSV. Or even like in the old Mercenaries game for PS2, I don't know. There is a tiny sense of this in the hospital escape sequence. Here are some locations I'd add: A rail yard or two, a few whole cities and lcoations that are fully explorable. I'm going to probably go overboard here, but bear with me. Locations such as London, Tokyo, Moscow, Beijing, Pyongyang, Chicago, Baltimore, Barcelona, Beirut, Belfast, Boston, Copenhagen, Dallas, Washignton DC, Delhi, Detroit, Dublin, Haiti, Havana, Istanbul, Kignston, Las Vegas, Texas, Long Island, Los Angeles, Manila, Mexico City, Miami, Mumbai, New Orleans, Paris, Pittsburgh, Portland Oregon, Rome, Singapore, Stockholm, Tehran, tel Aviv, Trinidad, Rio de Janiero, Brussels, Addis Ababa, Baghdad, Bogota, Lagos, and Montevideo, Uruguay. And some other ideas too(plurals just to be safe): Hotels and motels, train stations, nightclubs, marketplaces, Indonesia, mangrove swamps, settlements, caves, mines, back alleys, research facilities, hydroelectric dams, crash sites, skyscrapers, trains, construction sites, lush forests, mills, R&D places, sewer systems, military forts, depots, refineries, tropical resorts, ship fleets, small town main streets, suburbs, farmland, churches, black markets, concrete walled checkpoints, slums, building ruins, subways, office buildings, schools, refugee camps, flooded areas, mountain ranges, Wyoming-like forests, universities, megastores, lakeside resort towns, snowy forests, highways and freeways, icy wastelands, desert expanses, prisons, mansions, amusement parks, Chernobyl, theaters and opera houses, tanker ships, ruined castles, casinos, island resorts, mental asylums, national parks, Cold War bunkers, Korean Demilitarized Zone, submarine bases, nuclear plants, savannas, jungle guerrilla camps, gulags, Cambodian-Vietnamese border, Sino-Vietnamese border regions, Guatamela (mountain forests and cities), Shining Path bases, Malaysia, Kashmir, Iran-Iraq border, Ethiopia, swamps, mountain peaks and lodges, American deserts, island bases, rain forests, the Hotel del Coronado in San Diego (it's a very nice hotel) and villages.
3) More characters, and those already there get much more personality and backstory. For example, characters such as the Spetznaz commander and the CFA executive would get names, and new characters could be some such as US agents outside of Cipher's controls, looking to continue the Cold War espionage status quo and take out both Diamond Dogs and XOF. More factions too, such as battling UNITA instead of just their private forces.
4) Missions. A lot more, and not the done-in-three-minutes ones that are in the game. Again, some inspiration from the Uncharted series and the hospital sequence (as well as some sequences in Code Talker and Metallic Archaea missions), as well as the first four Solid games. More variety, lot more connected to the story, and the lengths expanded, to almost the time for an MGS4 act for each. And get rid fo the ranking system at the end of each mission, it takes away from total strategic freedom in completing the missions. And more "set piece missions" like the REX usage in Guns of the Patriots. Some examples of missions and mission types to include: Firefights with XOF, infiltrating the middle of an open battlefield, sneaking through a hotel to avoid XOF scouts within, surviving a white phosphorus mortar strike (taken from Spec Ops The Line), more boss battles, psychological operations on a client's behalf, coverly helping Big Boss find materiel to build Outer Heaven, assassination missions, sabotage, recon, search and destroy, anti-air battles, using anti-air turrets for a long time (like in Jak II), stowing away on a C130 supply aaircraft, intel retrieval, street long firefights (two examples to come to mind Three Leaf Clover in GTA 4, and that Hue City mission in Call of Duty Black Ops), Lone Wolf and Cub-style sub-story of revenge (it's not what Kojima envisioned, but would be awesome to include), smuggling, torture missions, acquiring of field safe houses, COINTELPRO-like stuff, raids, hsotage rescue, hijacking and fighting on a moving train, convoy rail shooter, more detailed village capture, economic warfare, finding out about the CIA's Special Activities Division, covert action paramilitary operations, nuclear espionage, helping Amanda against the Contras, battling body-snatchers develoepd by the USA or USSR or someone, using a humanitarian organization to gather info on XOF, counterterror ops, interrogating XOF soldiers with methods such as waterboarding (as Ocelot), searching places where Cipher is experimenting on humans, terrorist attacks and methods (such as conventional, urban bombings, and unconventional, bioterror), wanton destruction, hostage taking, fighting a force engaged in genocide and rape, leading a massacre in a civilian building to take out several high-ranking Cipher officials (mirroring that of XOF in Cyprus), escorting an HVT through a trap-filled forest or city, sabotaging an ammunition depot, return too Camp Omega to steal files regarding Cipher's covert strike forces, escaping a Soviet bloc prison and then state secret police in the streets, escaping Kowloon Walled City from an XOF ambush, vigilante actions against crime lords and such (Batman or Punisher style, you pick), and rescuing a young Naomi and Frank Hunter.
5) Gameplay. Make it not so expensive to use stuff. Add new stealth modes.
6) Restore all the stuff that was cut from the game (list from NeoGaf): - "80's Filter": Removed for being system-intensive. - Camp Omega Special Mission (E3 2013 Trailer): Unused for unknown reasons. - P.T Active Decoy ("Lisa") (2014 TGS gameplay presentation): Presumably cut for relationship to the cancelled "Silent Hills" project. - Missing Delivery Point Invoices (missing locations?): Removed for unknown reasons. - Usable Battle Gear during free-roam (Piggyback Collector's Edition strategy guide): Removed for balance reasons. - "Burned/Skull Boss" Model (Kojima 2015 Launch Trailer): Unused for unknown reasons. - Africa Burning Village Cutscene (E3 2014 trailer): Removed for unknown reasons. - Africa Child Soldier Training Cutscene: Unused for unknown reasons. - TGS 2014 Africa Mission (TGS 2014 gameplay presentation) - Mission 46 Unused Dialogue (found in game files) - "Mission 51" Unused Mission (found on CE Blu-Ray disc) - Unused/unknown alternate costumes from the leaked script, including "Foxtrot". And some more stuff I forgot to add to that list: Gameplay: Some mechanics that could've been in the game and improved from Peace Walker, and in general, such as the ability to lead a team of soldiers on stealth missions in the field, arena-like heavy combat, sneaking through a whole giant structure like in the first two Solid games, and even more CQC moves. More gadgets and tools that are automatically taken into the field, or not, such as a prototype grapple, charger, flashlight on the chest, upgradebale backpack, gas mask, first aid kits, and a Swiss Army Knife. "Skull mode" where Venom hallucinates himself as Skull Face, as a method of covering his own guilt at his actions.
Missions: Some possibles: Raiding a UNITA or MPLA camp to free child soldiers; assassinaitng a country's minister of something; huntnig down XOF and Cipher officials and hight value targets (for example an enforcer for Cipher who ensures. through blackmail or force, that a certain nation will secretly stay in Cipher's good graces); escorting a group of injured POWs deep in an enemy forest to an LZ due to losing your stash of Fulton devices; destroying jammers in a city area so an airstrike can be called in; clearing out a port in a war zone city for a client; escaping from a city in the midst of a serious riot; sabotaging guard towers and ICBM launchers ar a missile site; destroying a series of tunnel entrances; infiltrating a remote base where Cipher is developing new weapons of mass destruction and superguns; crossing through a trench line to sabotage soemthing; explore the Cyprus hospital once again to find some intel XOF did not know about before they realize it; infiltrate a nuclear reatcor complex; Venom heading out into the Afghan desert to find any sign of Quiet's remains, all while trying to hold in his pain at losing her; boss battle with a parasite-infected lizard that escaped from one of Skull Face's facilities;
Story: For one, lot of themes, such as gangsterism of big nations in history; the roles and purposes of nations; causes of wars such as greed and arrogance and revenge; the loss of original reasons for wars over time until they just exist; economic troubles; authoritarianism; drugs usage; the seeds of chanegs that contribute to the end of the Cold War; America's superpower status and moral self-righeousness (like in the original story plan); fatalism and nihilism at a world secretly controlled by forces and thugs beyond anyone's control; desperation of humanity to survive; the cusp of a much more techno world, as seen in the rest of the games set after this. Go more into the Metal Gear universe, its history, topics such as Skull Face's corruption and how Diamond Dogs helped shape world history. A lot more going into the themes of PAIN and RACE AND REVENGE, as well as how the first Big Boss becomes a giant prick, woven into the story structure. A lot of subplots to add to the main story, and I'll go hog wild here if I can with some ideas: 1)The return of the biological son of the original Bog Boss and a local prostitute from a brothel trip made by Jack and some of his friends before he shipped off to Korea, now intent on finding and meeting his father. 2) Diamond Dogs finds itself teaming up with a splinter group form Cipher, "the Purifiers", who believe in the original goal of Cipher but not the methods and what ever it's become nowm and a fragile alliance begins (and does eventually end). 3) Diamond Dogs goes up against another Cipher-controlled organization, this one much more like a covert mafia or corrupt multinational corporation, using blackmail, bribes, graft, threats, even hiring private military contractors in war zones who officially work for actors in the regions, but ultimately answer to the organization's economic and power interests (kind of like the RDA and mercs in Avatar). 4) A new mutation of the parasite emerges after the Shining Lights incident, which produces even more zombie-like effects, and the Dogs get into conflict with a rogue PF army that is looking to take it and use it themselves. 5) Flashbacks to such things as Kaz's flashbacks set before the game, in places like Grenada and Northern Ireland. 6) More confrontations with Skull Face, including sneaking into on of his bases, in the process learning a lot mroe about his earlier self. 7) Small short non-missions showing how Diamond Dogs and its obsession with destroying XOF and Cipher is having adverse consequences on members, their lives, etc.
